Caroline DeaconForthcoming fiction
I currently have two novels in progress:
Only Nutters Believe in Ghosts:Melissa is a freelance journalist in her mid 40s, living in London. She is still single and has no children, a fact which increasingly haunts her over the course of the year (and the novel).
The year starts with a commission to write an article about a bed and breakfast in Cornwall which claims to be haunted. This leads onto other “ghost hunting” work throughout the course of the year in various locations. Melissa herself does not believe in ghosts, but the ghosts seem to believe in her, and as the year progresses, she finds herself being haunted with alarming frequency.
However, each of the ghosts she encounters seem to relate to aspects of her life which haunt her for various reasons; there is the death of a small boy she once co-parented, the abortion she had in her teens, while previous relationships seem to be coming back and preying on her mind and while her current relationship is certainly in its death throws, she cannot seem to let it go, until the ghosts will not let her do anything else.
The biggest skeleton in the cupboard, however, is her father who abandoned her in a dramatic fashion when she was just a child; an event which has haunted her ever since, affecting her ability to sustain relationships with men. Eventually, as the ghosts press in on her, she is forced to confront this, and find out exactly why her father dissappeared.
Carved from Wood:
is an historical novel encompassing three generations of English and Scottish families, whose theme is the search for identity.
